Transitioning from playing my favorite songs to then trying to write original songs has been the most humbling experience of my life. Made me appreciate the hell out of the bands that have inspired me to become a drummer. It has been an amazing learning experience, It wasn’t easy and took WAY longer than I planned, and there have been plenty of times where I've spiraled downward thinking I will never be able to accomplish this, and that even if I will, that it’s going majorly suck. but at the end of it, I can truly say I didn’t take any shortcuts, I gave it my best, and that it came out pretty f’n bad ass - but I will let you guys be the judge of that once you’ve had the chance to properly blast the album through your sound system or headphones.
To signify the magnificence of this first ever original album release, ALL items included in this release carry the launch-only SILVER logo and are limited edition, limited quantity, and will never be printed again - AND you can get them SIGNED by yours truly until this campaign ends, at which point I’ll be on my way to meet my family in Europe and will be busy drinking margaritas alone while they obsessively outlet shop, I’m sure. Here's the official, magical, album artwork by Cameron Gray in various awesome limited edition forms - No words to express how much I love this piece of art, so I’m not even gonna try.
Thanks to Willy Wonka and to some awesome brands which I consider family, you can now win some really amazing prizes - just by being your awesome self, while purchasing any of the physical packages. they include anything from a Meinl cymbal to a full PDP drum set, and just to mix it up, I've added some Skype chats, Maximum Meytal DVD packages and other cool stuff. Check out the list on the right and ask the mighty gods of drums to bestow a golden ticket upon your package. Amen.
I was unbelievably blessed to have magically put together the most talented group of ppl to help me do this. Sahaj Ticotin my producer and co writer has been unbelievable through all of this - one of the most talented ppl I know and a genuinely good looking bald man. Eric Emery my fearless singer and Travis Montgomery with his mind boggling chops, were there from the very gitgo. Then came along Doc Coyle right on time to lay down his sick groove on a couple of tracks. and Anel Pedrero, though found once the album was already sealed, has quickly become my favorite practice buddy, as she intensely rocks - and I dig that. You guys rule. could NOT have done this without you.
My name is Meytal Cohen. Pretty common Israeli name that also just happens to sound like my favorite style of music. coincidence? I think not! I'm the youngest of 7. I have 4 sisters and 2 brothers. My dad died when I was 7 years old, when a drunk driver crashed while he was standing on the sidewalk. My mom successfully raised us all by herself.
I started playing drums at 18 years old, despite the conventional ‘you’re making noise, you’re wasting time, you’re spending money, and this will never mount to anything’ sorta attitude I was getting at home. That same year, I graduated from high school and was drafted to the Israeli Defense Force (it’s mandatory), I served my country for 2 years and was released from the IDF.
At age 21 I moved to Los Angeles to attended the LA Music Academy, and while in school I managed to break my back in a car accident. I broke three vertebras, and had to wear a back brace for 6 months. I returned to Israel for the healing process, and within a year came back to LA and later on graduated. After school, it wasn't easy, like it never really is for a musician trying to make a living at it. In 2009, me and a few friends shot an audition tape for 'America’s Got Talent' of a metal violin cover of System Of A Down's “Toxicity”. The show didn’t think much of us, but the video quickly became a viral hit gaining 3 MILLION views in just a couple of months. After seeing the response to our toxicity video, I decided I was going to shoot 100 drum covers of my favorite songs and see what happens next - I now have over 120,000,000 views, 850,000 subscribers on YouTube, and 1,200,000 likes on Facebook. UNREAL.
learning note for note covers of my favorite songs was (and still is) the best music school I could have ever asked for, but it wasn’t the reason why I became a musician. and so in 2013 I felt it was time for me to step outside my video making comfort zone, and try and create my first ever original album. I went to Kickstarter and asked my fans to help me raise $60k so that I can create this album. The response was incredible and you guys ended up pledging over $140k towards the album. Being able to create this record has been an incredible experience, I feel incredibly blessed to have been able to forge my own path with the support of my fans - from the very first youtube video to my very first album.
In the last year or so I’ve been searching for the best way to release this album. I wanted to make sure I’ll be able to record more albums, go on the road, have legit music videos, and really just use this album to launch a successful recording/touring career. Finding a record label with resources, connections and experience seemed to make the most sense. And so we booked our first show in hopes that some label reps come and check us out. Well something even more amazing happened - You guys showed up, and the show sold out! couldn’t believe it when I saw a huge line around the block of ppl waiting to come in. It was one of the most exciting experiences of my life - not only to play for you, but to meet you and give some of you a big hug at the “meet and greet”.
After our show at the whisky sold out, a few known labels started showing interest, and the possibility of signing with one label in particular seemed very exciting. There were talks of putting us on a huge festival tour this summer and for once it seemed like someone else was gonna do the heavy lifting - almost seemed too good to be true. Well, turns out it actually is too good to be true. Long story short, signing this deal would have meant that all the work and effort I put into my career, and this project, would be owned by the label - not exactly what I had in mind.
So as sucky as it is for me to give up on this glamorous possibility of signing with a label, and receiving the credibility and support that comes along with it, I decided to pass on the offer. So the bad news is that my plans to sign with a label fell through, for now… but the good news is I’ll be releasing this kickass album myself, I’ll retain ALL rights to my music, publishing and merchandise - and most importantly - I’ll retain the rights to myself. I didn’t work this hard and came this far to give it all away. pretty sure I can do it myself - all I need is YOU.
Forging our own path in life can be tricky business, and there’s literally no way of telling what will happen next. But I’ll tell you this much, when I moved to the US from Israel to follow my dreams, I had no idea what was coming my way. No clue that one day I was going to be a pretty well known drummer with over 1 million followers. I still today scratch my head in wonder about that one… how the hell did that happen?! and now I have my own album??? that IS so freaking COOL. And even if nothing else happens, I’ve managed to put out a full length mind blowing awesome album. And I have you guys to thank for it! so….HUGE Thanks and a bunch of hugs for your love and support throughout the years - this has been an amazing journey thus far, and I truly hope this is only the beginning of many more to come.
Wish me luck! :)
